Chanda Dancy is one of the fastest-rising composers working in Hollywood today, celebrated for her emotionally rich orchestral scores, bold musical experimentation and exceptional versatility across film, television and concert music. As a composer, violinist and multi-instrumentalist, Dancy has rapidly emerged as one of the industry’s most exciting contemporary musical voices.
Known for blending sweeping orchestral writing with electronic textures, global influences and deeply human storytelling, Dancy’s work spans genres ranging from prestige drama and horrorto comedy and large-scale action. She operates her own studio in Pasadena, where she composes, orchestrates and records music for major studio films and television productions.
Dancy is currently composing the score for the upcoming comedy feature Rolling Loud, directed by Jeremy Garelick and starring Owen Wilson, scheduled for theatrical release in late 2026. Her recent credits also include the Columbia Pictures slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer, the acclaimed thriller Blink Twice, directed by Zoë Kravitz, and the hit comedy One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA, which earned her an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Original Score.
Her television work has brought significant industry recognition, particularly for her sweeping score to the Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Awards nomination for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, along with recognition from the Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards. Earlier, her score for Netflix’s The Defeated marked a major turning point in her career and established her as a powerful orchestral storyteller working at scale.
In feature films, Dancy received Academy Awards shortlist recognition for her acclaimed score to Sony Pictures’ Devotion, directed by J.D. Dillard. She also composed the score for Kasi Lemmons’ Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, further cementing her reputation as one of Hollywood’s most compelling new composing talents.
Raised in Houston, Texas, Dancy began studying piano at age four before later taking up violin and composing orchestral works as a child. A graduate of USC’s prestigious scoring program, she continues to redefine what modern film music can sound like, combining technical virtuosity with profound emotional resonance.
Increasingly sought after by filmmakers and studios alike, Chanda Dancy is widely regarded as one of the defining next-generation composers in contemporary cinema.
