Matt Hill
Matt Hill is a Los Angeles–based composer and recording artist. In 2008, he launched the project Umberto, inspired by horror film scores of the 1970s and ’80s. Since then, he has released multiple albums, toured throughout the U.S. and Europe, and composed scores for feature films, short films, and immersive media projects.
As a recording artist, Hill has released music through labels including Thrill Jockey, Milan, Waxwork, Not Not Fun, and Death Waltz Recording Company. His live performances have included bills with some of the same film composers who influenced him, such as Fabio Frizzi, Goblin, and Alan Howarth. He has also performed live re-scores at festivals and events including Beyond Fest, the Glasgow Film Festival, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, Summer Cinema at Muzeon Park of the Arts in Moscow, and MondoCon. His alternate score for the 1982 slasher film Pieces was included on both the Grindhouse Releasing and Arrow Video Blu-ray editions. He also performed at the very first Cinematic Void event in Los Angeles for a screening of Burial Ground.
In 2020, Hill composed the score for Archenemy, produced by SpectreVision and directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, starring Joe Manganiello and Glenn Howerton. Additional film work includes All That We Destroy for Blumhouse Productions and Hulu, as well as Portraits and Crude Oil, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019. In 2018, he scored a series of short horror films for Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. His additional work includes documentaries, VR projects, and commercial campaigns.
